Honestly.. not sure what would be suitable. A popular motor, a complete enough wire harness and computer to make it run.
I own one of these cars, plenty of room to feature a intricate small motor. A stock engine from newer models will fit with some work and adapters. So that's around $700 minus whatever is sold to the scrapper afterwards.
Not to serious about that idea, honestly. It's good as-is until I break something.

Well, if you need moar power the Kei's won't cut it. It's simply too small.
I think it's better you wait until the EcoBoost crate engine on sale. I'm going to get one of those to stuff inside the soon-to-be-mine Mazda AZ1.
